In the beginning of Akhirah’s college career as a first year student, she was required to complete an assessment called Strengths Quest. Strengths Quest is a personalized online tool that identifies five themes of unique talents and qualities of students, which will then in turn, encourage the students to utilize them and share their special talents with the world. Her five included; harmony, futuristic, positivity, achiever, and maximizer. Knowing this has been extremely beneficial in her overall path of self-discovery and overall journey as a person and student. SUMMIT is a program offered at Agnes Scott that has been extremely useful in preparing her in becoming an active force in her career and in the global society. This program was designed to cultivate students’ leadership abilities and explore the global sphere, while offering them the opportunity to actually specialize in leadership development or global learning. Akhirah chose to specialize in leadership development because she has always wanted to enhance her ability in leading effectively, yet confidently. Her top five strengths made her realize that she is a leader who is compassionate, diplomatic and prefers to readily approach challenges with a positive outlook and open-mind.

Akhirah was tasked with exhibiting her strong leadership skills by creating a proposal outline that was presented to a panel of city officials by a group that consisted of her and a few other students in one of her leadership courses. Each group was tasked with providing an idea of how the city of Pine Lake, Georgia could beautify their bioretention basin. In order to achieve this, they created a specific course of action and assigned roles to each group member which established a sense of responsibility to fulfill designated obligations. The group of students also visited the community and interviewed residents on their opinions of the bio-retention basin and the beautification project, which informed their proposition and design. Agnes Scott College has prepared its students for active engagement in the community in multiple ways therefore, they were  well equipped in our interactions with the residents of Pine Lake.

In the summer of 2018, Akhirah also attended Karamah DC’s Law and Leadership Summer Program. There she gained insight on Islamic Jurisprudence amongst other women from all over the world. The program was very empowering as they worked to dissect and debunk common misconceptions about the status of women in Islam, and these myths often influence the treatment they receive from their male counterparts.
