Akhirah Abdul-Rasheed was born in Atlanta, GA. As an adolescent, she was always comfortable and empowered when surrounded by intelligent and well-spoken women. She was also interested in global relations and health, all of which is why she chose to attend  Agnes Scott College. She knew she’d be able to freely express her voice and talents yet receive the best education that suited her academic needs and interests along the way. In 2018, Akhirah traveled internationally to Central Europe and immersed herself with the people and culture there through an institutionally funded program called Global Journeys. She, along with other students, were given the opportunity to also meet key political leaders to discuss and gain a better understanding of the current political climate. After this trip, Akhirah’s interest in how structures and systems in place affected the lives of citizens of countries around the globe ignited. Yet, she had the urge to satisfy her interest in health as well. Therefore, she declared Public Health as her major because it offered a curriculum that would intersect those two fascinations. After Agnes Scott, she hopes to break into the field of maternal health, and improve the quality of prenatal care amongst minority women.
